Climate adaptation and mitigation require carbon solutions. As a result, world governments and companies are prioritising carbon management in the net zero race.

Do carbon offsets work?

Carbon offsets can aid emission reduction and reduce climate change but should not replace direct emissions reductions.

Instead, people, organisations, and governments can offset their carbon emissions by investing in GHG emissions-reducing projects like renewable energy, forest conservation, and energy efficiency.

Changes in behaviour, energy efficiency, and low-carbon technologies are needed to combat climate change.

Carbon offsets work best when they sponsor high-quality projects. Moreover, some carbon offset schemes may not reduce emissions or cause unintentional harm, such as displacing local residents or destroying wildlife. Thus, authorising organisations must adequately assess and verify carbon offset initiatives to reduce emissions and be socially and environmentally beneficial.
