When I started ecoHQ in 2019, I intended it to be a database or directory of sorts for eco-enthusiasts and ecopreneurs to discover several local eco-friendly, ethical businesses, events and other services so they could lead a more sustainable lifestyle or run their ventures better.
So, without any base, I started messaging ventures and influencers on Instagram to list them on my platform. By the end of 2021, I had spoken to at least 500 businesses, aspiring entrepreneurs and eco-enthusiasts.
To date, I have done a lot of pro bono consulting for startups, individuals who want to shift their careers to climate and sustainability, folks who find my work exciting and like my opinions on what they should do about a thing they are in two minds about or want to rant about and entrepreneurs who wish to soundboard startup ideas with me.
I started several pro-bono initiatives and paid services to experiment and determine a solution-market fit. Given my personal constraints, the directory option wasn’t feasible, so I pivoted to offering content development and communication consulting for various businesses. Two years later, I discovered several pervasive problems with the startup ecosystem.
- Consumer Apathy: Public indifference towards sustainability creates a barrier to making several solutions mainstream.
- Greenwashing: Deceptive marketing practices mislead consumers and hinder the visibility of genuine sustainable brands.
- Mixed Messages: Is this sustainable or that? Menstrual cups or cloth pads? Should you use Bio-compostable disposable plates or reuse stainless steel utensils? (I am looking at you, Bangalore!). Are Kulhads sustainable? Should we buy an electric car or not? There is so much misinformation that customers run if they hear the words ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘sustainability.’
- Ineffective Sustainability Champions: Some brands who’ve created a name for themselves in the climate or sustainability market are not promoting responsible consumerism. You can check out their socials and find out who they aggressively advocate for minimalism and slow consumerism one day and spam you with discounts, offers, promotions, sales and FOMO the next day. I get that these brands need customers to survive but must also actively put their efforts into figuring out reverse logistics or educating their consumers about wastage while researching sales tactics #jussayin
- Lack of Specialised Support: Niche support, especially sub-niche mentorship (carbon management, waste management, ocean tech) and peer networks, is crucial but often missing.
- Operational Challenges: Navigating complex supply chain issues and maintaining operations (for instance, getting low MoQ-based raw materials at reasonable rates or lowering employee turnover rates) poses a significant hurdle.
- Resource Constraints: The high cost of marketing, branding, PR, and sales services creates a financial barrier.
- Strategic Development: Startups need help identifying partnerships that are beneficial for business growth.
- Market Knowledge: Lack of access to climate industry intelligence hinders informed decision-making.
- Incubator Ineffectiveness: Many incubators fail to provide adequate infrastructure and support.
- Limited Resources for Prototyping: Securing funding, grants and resources for initial prototypes can be challenging.
- Sales and Marketing Challenges: Difficulty identifying effective sales channels within the sustainability space.
AND MORE!
Have I figured out the solutions for these without burning myself out? Not yet. But, I am currently consulting for three startups and looking for ways to scale my solutions. So, I am open to exploring partnerships with various entities as long as they are startup-friendly.
Below will be promotions of my services. Feel free to skip this section:
